No one would be more surprised than they that the legacy of their lives continues to draw interest around the world, some 75 years later.
What’s behind this increasing interest?
Perhaps it’s their extraordinary love story, coupled with the remarkable courage and valor they displayed during one of civilization's darkest moments.
In a time when challenges abound, their legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in love and the importance of standing up for what is right.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, an up-and-coming professor, and Maria von Wedemeyer, from landed aristocracy, had a far better chance than most to emerge from the ruins of Hitler’s Germany to live happily ever after... had they only been willing to look the other way.
But... that is what Dietrich & Maria is about.
Adding to such an engaging story is the intimate record they left us of their own thoughts and feelings — which made it all the more possible to craft a musical that springs directly from their love letters to each other."
Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s numerous works on ethics, theology, and practical Christianity are widely available. He is the subject of 20-30 major biographies in English alone as well as a recent major motion picture.
Maria von Wedemeyer later became the first woman to head a computing department at Honeywell in Boston. Her remarkable correspondence with Dietrich can be found in Love Letters from Cell 92, published by Abingdon Press.

ABOUT THE RECORDING
It can take years for a musical to make it to Broadway. For instance, Come From Away, the musical about the 9/11 plane groundings in Newfoundland, took six years to make it to Broadway.
Dietrich & Maria started with two “staged readings” (with full orchestra) which led to a full, sold out five-show run at California Baptist University.
